Meatballs with Tomato Sauce

Meatballs is one recipe that is often served with other appetizers during receptions, or gatherings with friends. You need some appetizer ideas? Try this meatball recipe that is light, delicious and with short preparation and cooking time. Use this or your favorite tomato sauce recipe, make meatballs and cook them, with no frying and excess fat.


for the meatballs:

500gr. (1.10 pounds ) ground veal meat

2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs

1 teaspoon salt

1 egg, whole

1 onion, grated

1 garlic clove, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, chopped

for the tomato sauce:

1 can 400gr. (0.90 pounds ) whole or chopped plum tomatoes

1 onion

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon sweet red paprika

3 tablespoons all purpose white flour

and some fresh basil for decoration


Place the ground meat in a large bowl, add the dry ingredients. Add the egg, onion, garlic and work the meat with your hands. Knead well.

Form small meatballs approximately 24 in number. Cover and refigerate the meatballs half an hour, or for at least 15 minutes if you are in a hurry.

In the meantime prepare the sauce. Open the can and pour the tomatoes in to the food processor. Add the onion and pulse them together.

Put this sauce in a large pan add salt, sugar, and paprika. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes, covered.

In the mean time take the meatballs from the refrigerator, roll each of them in the flour add them to the panwith the tomato sauce and simmer for another 20 minutes – uncovered. When the sauce is getting thick then it is ready to be served.

This sauce can be served with any type of pasta, homemade spaghetti, rice or mashed potatoes.
