Bolognese Sauce Recipe

There are so many variations of Bolognese sauce recipe. I am presenting the oldest, simple and most tasty sauce with ground beef and white wine. Bolognese is one of the most known sauce recipes from Italy. When talking about spaghetti sauce recipes this is a must have in your notebook and menu. You can serve it on top of hot spaghetti, tagliatelle, penne pasta or make layers for your lasagna.


3 tablespoons olive oil

4 slices of smoked bacon, chopped

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 carrot, chopped

500 gr. ground beef

1 cup (200 ml) white wine

1 can (400 gr) chopped tomatoes in a tomato juice

1 Laurel Bay leaf

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried celery leaves

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon white pepper powder

Grated or slices of Parmesan cheese for serving

In a heavy bottom, medium size sauce pan, heat the oil and saute the bacon until it turns golden brown.

Add onion, garlic and carrots and continue frying until onions are translucent and tender.

Put the meat inside and fry until it changes color and smell is nice and pleasant.

Now pour the wine and cook until wine evaporates up to 1/3 rd of what we had in the sauce pan.

At this point pour tomatoes in. Add Laurel Bay leaf, salt, sugar, pepper and celery leaves.

Lower the heat and simmer covered for 1 hour. Stir occasionally..

If you follow all the steps of this Bolognese Sauce Recipe, the sauce should be thick and juicy.

Cook the dry or fresh homemade pasta and serve it with generous amount of sauce on top. Sprinkle grated Parmesan on top, or serve several slices of this cheese on the side.
